YouTube to Instagram

YouTube content isn't ready for Instagram as it is: the ratio is different, the way people watch is different, attention spans are different. On YouTube viewers watch sound on, often on a big screen and decide within the first 15 seconds; on Instagram it's fast in the feed, strangers in Explore and the first 3 seconds. BeamTake bridges the gap: it pulls out the parts of a long recording that stand on their own, frames them for 9:16 (Reels) · 4:5 (feed) and burns in the captions.

How it works

YouTube to Instagram: step by step

Try it free
01

Paste the YouTube link

Drop the link in the box. The whole video isn't downloaded; only the audio is fetched first, so even long recordings start quickly.

02

Get the best moments

Speech is transcribed with word timing, and segments that start and end cleanly and make sense on their own are scored. Pick the ones you want from the list.

03

Frame it for 9:16 (Reels) · 4:5 (feed)

The frame follows the speaker's face and leaves room for the part of the screen Instagram's interface covers (~250 px at the top and ~320 px at the bottom are covered by the interface).

04

Burn in captions

Captions are rendered into the video, no separate file needed. Pick one of nine styles; font size scales to the ratio automatically.

05

If your account is connected the clip goes straight out; or put it on the calendar for a good time on Instagram.

Why you can't just upload a YouTube video to Instagram

First, framing. A YouTube recording is 16:9 (long-form) · 9:16 (Shorts), while Instagram wants 9:16 (Reels) · 4:5 (feed). Cropping the center leaves the speaker out of frame; when the speaker moves, the frame has to move with them.

Second, length. On Instagram: Reels up to 3 minutes for recommendations. Cutting from the start of a long recording doesn't work, because what grabs viewers is where the topic turns, not the opening.

Third, sound. In the Instagram feed video is often fast in the feed, strangers in Explore. Without captions, it might as well not be watched.

How content travels on Instagram

On Instagram, Reels reach people who don't know you through Explore, while the feed reaches your followers. The two audiences expect different things: an Explore viewer has no context, a follower does. That's why the same first sentence can work in one place and fall flat in the other.

What to watch out for on Instagram

  • The cover frame is cropped to 3:4 on your profile grid; keep faces and text in the middle.
  • The Reels caption strip sits on top of your captions; stay inside the safe area.
  • Explore traffic comes from people who don't know you: the first sentence has to set up the context too.
  • If a clip goes out both as a Reel and a feed post, export 9:16 and 4:5 separately instead of cropping one.

What's special about recordings from YouTube

Content on YouTube travels two ways: search and recommendations. Search keeps sending traffic for years, recommendations spike in the first hours and fade. The Shorts feed sits in between: it spreads through recommendations but is also fed by search.

  • In the Shorts feed the title sits on the bottom strip, so keep captions in the lower-middle third of the frame.
  • YouTube is the second-largest search engine: put the phrase people actually search for in the clip's title and description.
  • Chapters of a long video are rarely good clip boundaries; where a thought ends is not where a chapter ends.

FAQ

Can I make Instagram clips without downloading the YouTube video?

Yes. Just paste the link; you don't need to download anything. Only the audio is transcribed, and video is fetched just for the ranges you pick.

What if the framing misses the speaker?

Framing follows the face and is smoothed, so it doesn't jump. If you're not happy, re-render the clip with a different ratio; nothing is re-transcribed, only the framing changes.

How many Instagram clips come out of one YouTube video?

It depends on how dense the conversation is. A forty-minute recording typically gives 6–10 standalone moments; you pick which ones to publish.

Can I fix the captions afterwards?

Yes. Edit them line by line in the dashboard, or download the .srt, fix it and burn it in again. Handy for names and brand names.
