Remove backgrounds for DTF printing

Remove the background from your design and clean the white halo, semi-transparent pixels and specks along the edges, so the DTF printer lays white ink only under the design.

Where do the white specks in DTF come from?

A DTF printer lays white ink under the color layer. Any pixel that isn't fully transparent, however faint, gets white underbase. That's why the semi-transparent, white-tinted edge pixels of a design cut from a white background print as a thin white line and scattered specks on the shirt.

The background remover makes every pixel either fully opaque or fully transparent, replaces the edge color with the design's own color, and chokes the edge by two or three pixels.

Pre-print checklist

  • Preview on the dark shirt background: any white halo shows up right away
  • The 'semi-transparent pixels' count in the report should be zero
  • Enter the print width in centimeters; the image is scaled to it at 300 DPI
  • You get a warning when a small source is enlarged a lot; try again with a larger source

FAQ

Doesn't a hard edge look jagged?

At 300 DPI one pixel is 0.08 mm, which you won't see in print. You can choose a soft edge in the settings, but semi-transparent pixels get white underbase.

Will white areas in my design be removed?

Background-colored areas touching the edge or enclosed gaps are removed. To keep white inside the design, turn off 'clean letter holes'.
